How to Choose an Electric Bike
A short, practical checklist for comparing e-bikes before you buy. Prices and specifications change often, so always confirm details on the store page.
1. Decide how you will ride
- Commuting: fenders, lights, a rack and a comfortable upright position matter more than top speed.
- Trails and hills: look for strong torque, front suspension and good brakes.
- Folding or compact: easier to store and carry, usually with smaller wheels and a lower weight limit.
- Cargo: check the maximum load, which covers rider and cargo together.
2. Motor type
- Hub motor: sits in the wheel, simpler and usually cheaper. Fine for flat and moderate terrain.
- Mid-drive motor: sits at the pedals and uses the bike gears, which tends to feel more natural and climb hills better, usually at a higher price.
- Power rating: a higher watt number is not automatically better. Also look at torque (Nm) if you ride hills.
3. Battery and range
- Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). You can estimate it as volts multiplied by amp-hours.
- More Wh generally means more range, but real range depends on rider weight, terrain, wind, tires and assist level.
- Treat the advertised maximum range as a best case, not a typical result.
- Check whether the battery is removable for charging indoors, and what a replacement costs.
4. Classes, speed limits and the law
- In the US, e-bikes are commonly grouped into Class 1 (pedal assist up to 20 mph), Class 2 (also has a throttle, up to 20 mph) and Class 3 (pedal assist up to 28 mph). Local rules differ, so check yours.
- In the EU and UK, road-legal e-bikes are generally limited to 25 km/h assisted speed and 250 W continuous motor power.
- Check whether helmets, registration or age limits apply where you live.
5. Brakes, frame and weight
- Hydraulic disc brakes give more reliable stopping than mechanical ones, especially with the extra weight of an e-bike.
- E-bikes are heavy. Check the total weight if you need to carry the bike upstairs or lift it onto a rack.
- Check the frame sizing chart and the maximum rider weight.
6. Before you order
- Warranty length for the battery, motor and frame, and who handles claims.
- Delivery area, shipping cost and whether the bike arrives partly assembled.
- Return policy, and who pays for return shipping on a heavy box.
- Availability of spare parts and a charger replacement.
